In the footsteps of Vangelis Soukas – a museum theatre programme performed by Lefteris Katachanas. Let’s get ready for a special experience at the Museum, as we will travel back in time, to September 1993!
In this journey, we will meet Kostis, who arrives at the Museum in search of information about his childhood friend Vangelis Soukas, the great Roma musician from Komboti in Arta. After all, he has learned that many other important musicians have already donated their musical instruments to the new Museum… Why shouldn’t Vangelis be among them? A clarinet master from a musical family, with an international presence, who collaborated with musicians such as Manolis Chiotis, Rita Sakellariou and Stelios Kazantzidis, and faced the challenges and adversities of a disruptive era but also social suspicion and prejudice towards Roma musicians… How could this Museum be missing him? In this meeting, Kostis shares with us the stories, sounds and customs of the past, but above all, a deep friendship that transcended prejudices and stereotypes.

Meeting the Thessalian Roma musicians – a cross-cultural encounter and discussion led by Panagiotis Charitos. Here, we will explore the musical traditions of Thessaly, as preserved to this day by the Greek Roma of the area, to discover the hidden stories of their musical instruments through the eyes of Panagiotis Charitos, a Thessalian Roma who overcame many challenges to obtain his master’s degree, and who has pioneered actions to combat the exclusion of the Greek Roma. Over drinks in the museum garden after his presentation, Panagiotis will share unique insight and stories from the musicians of his community.
