Taking the form of an experimental workshop series, this research project explored the contribution of theatre and drama education to the development of historical thinking in young learners, as well as its legacy within museum and heritage learning programmes. The research team set out to design a programme that would draw on historical events to bring contemporary questions of citizenship and human rights into focus.
Placed in the role of 5th century Athenians during a period of war, workshop participants are invited to analyse the fundamentals of democracy, and to reflect upon the human cost of conflict. The paper, Drama & Theater in Heritage Education: Negotiating History was presented at the 8th International Conference on Theatre/Drama and Performing Arts in Education, Athens 2018 and published in the conference’s proceedings.
